Choosing the Right Apples for Your Crisp
The type of apple you choose can make or break your apple crisp. While many varieties work well, some are better suited for baking than others. The type of apple you choose depends on how sweet or tart you want your crumble to be. Just be sure to pick apples that hold their shape when cooked.
Tart and firm, Granny Smith apples hold up well under heat, providing a nice contrast to the sweet topping. Honeycrisp apples are an excellent choice if you like a balance of sweetness and tartness. Fuji apples are sweet and juicy, making them a good option if you prefer a sweeter filling. With a mix of sweetness and a hint of spice, Braeburn apples bring a complex flavor to your crisp.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Apples – Cooking apples such as granny smith, Bramley, Braeburn, pink lady, honey crisp, fuji, or other semi-sour apples work great with air fryer apple crisp without oats recipe.
- Sugar – I prefer using demerara sugar for the apple filling and caster sugar for the crumble. You can also use muscovado or brown sugar. Adjust the amount of sugar to your taste and the type of apples you use.
- Flour – All-purpose flour (plain white flour) works well, but you can experiment with almond flour for a gluten-free option.
- Butter – Cold, unsalted butter is key to creating that crumbly texture.
- Walnuts – I love adding walnuts to my crumble as they add flavor and a nice crunch. I toast them lightly for a more intense flavor before using them for baking.
- Cinnamon – It is a must, but you can also add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice for extra warmth.
How to Make Apple Crisp Without Oats in an Air Fryer?
Important Note
Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.
Making this classic fall dessert is surprisingly straightforward. However, you need to follow a few simple tips and steps to achieve the best results:
Prepare the Apple Filling
Peel and core the apples using an apple corer. Cut them in halves, then thinly slice them evenly to ensure they cook at the same rate. If you like a bit of texture in your dessert, you can leave the skin on, but peeling is generally recommended for a smoother filling.
Set your air fryer to 180°C (356°F) and place the sliced apples, sugar, and cinnamon in a cake pan or baking dish that fits in your air fryer basket. For this recipe, I use a 7½-inch (18½ cm) cake pan.
Cook the apples for 14-16 minutes, until the apples are slightly softened. Give them a shake to make sure all the apples are coated with sugar and cinnamon and are all cooked evenly.
Let the apple filling cool down for 10 minutes while preparing the crumble topping.
Prepare the Crumble Topping
Cut the cold butter into small cubes or grate it, and place it in a large bowl with the caster sugar and plain flour.
Quick Tip!
You must use the butter when it is still cold. This will give your crumble a nice crunchy texture.
Rub them together using your fingertips until they look like breadcrumbs. Add the crushed walnuts to the crumb and lightly rub the mixture with your fingertips until combined, without overworking it.
Assemble and Cook Apple Crisp
Once your apples are slightly cooled down, gently spread the crumb topping evenly over the apples using a silicon spatula.
Place the dish in the air fryer basket and cook for about 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the crisp as it cooks, checking after 10 minutes to ensure the topping doesn’t burn. If the topping is browning too quickly, you can cover the dish with a piece of aluminum foil for the remainder of the cooking time.
Let your apple crisp rest for 5-10 minutes before serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of homemade custard.
Expert Tips From The Chef
- Use apples that hold their shape during baking such as granny smith, Bramley, Braeburn, honey crisp, and fuji.
- Whether you peel or don’t peel your apples is totally up to you as long as you slice them the same size. This step is necessary to have your apples cooked evenly.
- Make sure the butter you use for the crumb topping is extremely cold. Keep your butter in the freezer for 10 minutes and work quickly while rubbing it with flour to avoid the butter getting soft.
- When preparing the crumble topping, lightly rub the mixture with your fingertips until combined, without overworking it.
- Just like the traditional apple crisp, serve this air fryer version warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Apple Crisp Without Oats?
Apple crisp is best enjoyed warm, straight from the air fryer. But what you pair it with can take your dessert to the next level. Some classic pairings are :
- The cold, creamy texture of Homemade Turkish Ice Cream – Maras Dondurma contrasts beautifully with the warm, crunchy crisp.
- A dollop of freshly whipped cream adds a light and airy touch.
- Drizzle some warm homemade custard or caramel sauce over your apple crisp for an extra layer of sweetness.
Although it is best when served warm out of the air fryer, I also happily eat it cold out of the fridge or at room temperature for breakfast!
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
You can store your leftover apple crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. I don’t recommend freezing apple crumble as the apples get soggy while thawing and the crumble loses its crunchy texture.
To reheat, place your apple crisp in the air fryer at 325°F (160°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through. This will help restore the crispiness of the topping.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can mix in other fruits like berries, pears, or peaches to create a variety of flavors.
You can use any small, oven-safe dish that fits in your air fryer, such as a mini cast-iron skillet or a small ceramic baking dish.
Adding nuts already makes this crumble crunchy but if you want some extra crunch, you can sprinkle some coarse sugar on top before cooking.
