Skip the oven and grab your air fryer. Roasting chestnuts in the air fryer is way easier and just as tasty. They’re warm, soft on the inside, and just a little crisp on the outside.

Please continue scrolling down to find the recipe card below, which contains the complete list of ingredients with measurements, detailed recipe instructions, additional notes, and nutritional information.

These air fryer roasted chestnuts make the perfect cold-weather snack. They’re also great tossed into salads, mixed into stuffings, or eaten straight from the bowl. This method keeps things simple; no fancy ingredients or extra steps. Just chestnuts, a quick soak, and a few minutes in the air fryer. The result? Warm, soft, and perfectly roasted chestnuts that peel easily and taste just right.

It’s one of those snacks that feels more effort than it actually is. And once you try it, you’ll probably want to make a double batch.

What You’ll Need: Ingredients and Tools

Let’s keep it simple here. The ingredients list is short, and chances are, you already have what you need.

Main Ingredients

  • Fresh chestnuts (as many as you’d like). I live near woods full of chestnut trees, so I forage mine! They’re slightly smaller than the shop-bought ones, so if you’re using larger chestnuts, you might need to add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
  • Water (for blanching)

That’s it. No oil or butter. No spices unless you want to add some salt while boiling.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Towel – to wrap them after roasting
  • Air fryer – preferably one with a basket rather than a tray

How to Roast Chestnuts in the Air Fryer

Important Note

Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.

Rinse the chestnuts well under cold water. They can be dusty or a bit grimy, especially if they’re fresh from the market. Chestnuts have tough shells, and if you don’t cut them, they’ll explode while cooking. Take your paring knife and carefully cut an “X” into the rounded side of each chestnut.

Go through the outer shell and just into the inner skin. Holding the chestnut on a cutting board rather than in your hand makes it safer. Once scored, toss them into a pot of water, bring to a gentle boil, and let them blanch for 10 minutes. You can add a teaspoon of salt to the water at this stage for extra flavor.

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Not all air fryers need preheating, but it helps get that even roast. Drain the chestnuts from the water and pat them dry. You don’t want them dripping wet. Place the chestnuts in the air fryer basket, cut side up. Don’t overcrowd the basket. Give them space so the air can circulate.

Roast for 12–15 minutes, shaking the basket once halfway through. You’ll know they’re done when the shells curl back and the nut inside looks golden. Once out of the fryer, wrap them in a clean towel for 10 minutes. This step traps the heat and steam, loosening the skins. After that, they’re ready to peel and eat. Grab a warm one and peel off the shell while it’s still soft.

Recipe Tips From the Chef

Chestnuts are pretty straightforward, but a few simple tips can make the whole process smoother and the result even better.

  • Start by picking good chestnuts. Go for ones with firm, glossy shells and skip any that have holes, mould, or feel light and hollow. If they rattle when you shake them, they’re probably dried out.
  • When it comes to scoring, using a paring knife works fine, but if you find it tricky, a serrated knife or chestnut cutter can make things easier.
  • Some folks prefer cutting the flat side so the chestnuts stay steady, but scoring the rounded side often makes peeling a bit easier once they’re cooked.
  • If you don’t have time to blanch them, don’t worry; a quick soak in hot water or even microwaving them in water for a couple of minutes will help soften the shells.
  • Keep an eye on the cook time, too. Chestnuts can dry out fast in the air fryer. Once the shells start curling back and darkening, they’re usually done.
  • Peel air fryer roasted chestnuts while warm. Once cold, the skins get stubborn.

How to Serve Roasted Chestnuts

Chestnuts are tasty on their own, but they also play well with others.

Simple Ways to Eat Them

  • Warm, with a sprinkle of sea salt
  • Tossed into a winter salad
  • Chopped into rice or grain bowls

Sweet Options

  • Drizzle with a little honey
  • Mash and fold into whipped cream for a dessert topping

Savory Pairings

  • Serve with Brussels sprouts or roasted squash
  • Mix into stuffing or add to a charcuterie board

They’re versatile, so don’t overthink it. Just eat them warm and enjoy.

Storage Instructions

If you’ve got leftovers (which honestly doesn’t happen often), roasted chestnuts can be stored pretty easily. Once they’re peeled, pop them into an airtight container and store them in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze them. Just make sure they’re completely cooled and peeled, then seal them in a freezer-safe bag or container.

When you’re ready to use them, a quick reheat in the microwave or air fryer will bring them back to life. One thing to avoid is leaving peeled chestnuts uncovered on the counter. They’ll dry out fast and lose that nice soft texture.

And if you’re tempted to store unpeeled roasted chestnuts, skip it. The shells trap moisture and turn the texture rubbery. Always peel before storing for the best results.

Recipe FAQs

Can I roast chestnuts in the air fryer without scoring them?

Nope. You really can’t skip this. If you do, they’ll explode. The pressure builds up inside the shell and causes a mess. Always score each chestnut before cooking.

How do I know if chestnuts are bad?

Bad chestnuts are often light, mouldy, or have tiny holes. If one floats in water, it might be dried out or hollow. Toss anything that smells sour or has a cracked, dry shell.

Why are my roasted chestnuts hard or dry?

Overcooking is usually the reason. They only need about 12–15 minutes in the air fryer. If they go too long, they dry out and lose that soft bite. Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes.
