Making granola in an air fryer is a great option because it cooks faster and more evenly. When you bake granola in the oven, you often have to stir it a few times to avoid uneven browning. The air fryer, on the other hand, uses circulating hot air to give you a crunchy, golden result in much less time.

It’s perfect for busy mornings when you want a quick batch or when you’re in the mood for fresh granola without waiting too long. Additionally, the air fryer doesn’t heat up your kitchen like an oven would, making it a great option year-round.

Ingredients You’ll Need

The beauty of granola is its versatility. You can easily customize it to your taste or whatever you have in your pantry. However, a basic granola recipe usually includes the following components:

  • Oats – Rolled oats are the best option for a good granola. They’re hearty, nutritious, and perfect for creating that crunchy texture.
  • Nuts and seeds – Cashews and coconut shavings are my preferred nuts but almonds, walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, or chia seeds are a great alternative too.
  • Sweetener – Maple syrup or honey works well to add a natural sweetness without refined sugars.
  • Fat – A little bit of coconut oil helps the granola crisp up nicely.
  • Dried Fruit – Raisins, sultanas, cranberries, or dried apricots add a chewy contrast to the crunchy oats. I usually add them at the last minute as they tend to burn quickly.
  • Spices and Flavorings – Cinnamon and a pinch of salt can enhance the overall flavor of the granola. You can also add a little vanilla for a richer aroma.

How to Make Easy Homemade Air Fryer Granola?

Important Note

Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.

Making this 15-minute homemade air fryer granola is very easy. However, you need to follow a few simple steps to achieve the best results:

Place the coconut oil and honey in a small saucepan and gently melt them on low heat.

Set your air fryer to 340°F (170°C). Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Spread the granola evenly in the air fryer basket and press it down lightly to create a flat layer. Don’t overcrowd the basket, as the air needs space to circulate. If your air fryer is small, you might need to cook in batches.

Set the timer for 8-10 minutes, checking and gently stirring halfway through to ensure even cooking. Keep an eye on it to avoid burning.

Once the granola is golden brown and crisp, remove it from the air fryer and let it cool completely. As it cools, it will harden and become even crunchier.

Quick Tip!

You can add chocolate chips after removing the granola from air fryer, as adding them before could cause them to melt.

Troubleshooting Common Air Fryer Granola Mistakes

Even with a simple recipe like this, a few things can go wrong. Here are some tips to help you avoid common mistakes:

Too Soft or Soggy Granola

If your granola turns out soft rather than crispy, you might not have cooked it long enough. Increase the cooking time by a few minutes, but be sure to check frequently to avoid burning.

Burnt Granola

Since air fryers cook faster than ovens, it’s easy to accidentally overcook granola. Check your granola halfway through and stir it to ensure even cooking. If it looks like it’s browning too fast, lower the temperature by 10-20 degrees.

Not Clumping Together

If you prefer your granola in clumps, try gently pressing the granola mixture down into the basket before cooking. Using a sticky sweetener like honey or syrup helps the oats bind together.

Storing and Serving Instructions

Once your granola has cooled, transfer it to an airtight container or a mason jar. It will stay fresh for up to two weeks at room temperature. If you make a large batch, you can also freeze it for longer storage. Just be sure to let it thaw for a few minutes before eating.

You can enjoy homemade granola in many ways:

  • Topping for yogurt or ice cream: Sprinkle some granola over your favorite yogurt or Homemade Turkish Ice Cream and you have a quick and easy dessert when you crave something sweet.
  • Smoothie bowls: Add a handful of granola on top of a smoothie bowl for added fiber and crunch.
  • Snack on-the-go: Pack some in a resealable bag for an easy, portable snack.

Customizing Your Granola

One of the best things about homemade granola is that you can adjust the recipe to suit your tastes. Whether you prefer a more nutty, fruity, or chocolatey version, there are endless combinations to explore.

Nut-Free Version

If you or someone in your household has a nut allergy, you can swap out the nuts for seeds like sunflower, pumpkin, or chia seeds. These add a similar crunch and nutritional benefits without the nuts.

Gluten-Free Option

To make your granola gluten-free, ensure you’re using certified gluten-free oats. Most oats are naturally gluten-free, but cross-contamination during processing can occur, so it’s best to double-check.

Sugar-Free Granola

For those watching their sugar intake, you can skip the sweetener entirely or use a sugar substitute like stevia or monk fruit. Keep in mind that the granola may not clump together as much without a sticky sweetener like honey or syrup, but it will still be tasty.

Recipe FAQ s

Can I use steel-cut oats instead of rolled oats?

Steel-cut oats won’t work as well in this recipe because they don’t soften and cook the same way. Stick to rolled oats for the best texture.

How do I prevent the granola from burning in the air fryer?

Check the granola frequently and stir halfway through the cooking process to prevent burning. You can also lower the temperature if it’s browning too quickly.

Is it necessary to preheat the air fryer?

Preheating isn’t always required, but it can help ensure even cooking from the start, leading to a crispier texture overall.
