Air Fryer Toast
Looking to switch up your breakfast routine with minimal effort? Ever wondered if your air fryer could do more than just fry? Well, guess what? You’re in for a treat! I’ve got a quick and easy kitchen hack for you: you can toast your bread in the air fryer.
Your air fryer isn’t limited to just crisping up French fries and chicken tenders. It’s also a surprisingly efficient tool for making perfectly golden toasted bread with a different kind of crunch.
All you need is your trusty air fryer, a few slices of your favorite bread, and some delicious toppings to go along with your toast.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Bread – I hardly buy any bread, preferring instead to rely on these foolproof recipes for Homemade Sandwich Bread or Dutch Oven Sourdough Bread whenever I need toast for breakfast. I make them in batches, slice them, put them in freezer bags, and store them in the freezer for future use. They’re incredibly convenient, and I can toast them straight from the freezer!
- Butter – Butter is practically a must-have for toast! Whether you choose to spread it before or after toasting is entirely up to you. One of the great things about using your air fryer to make toast is that you can apply the butter before toasting if you like!
How to Toast Bread in the Air Fryer
Important Note
Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.
Using your air fryer for making toast is extremely easy. However, there are a few tips and tricks you need to follow for the best results:
Preheat your air fryer to 360°F (180°C). While the air fryer is preheating, slice your bread if it is not already sliced.
Once the air fryer is preheated, place the bread slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they are not overlapping. My air fryer is large enough to fit 4 slices but if you have a smaller version, do it in batches.
If you prefer, you can lightly butter the bread slices before placing them in the air fryer.
Cook the bread slices in the air fryer for 4-6 minutes, or until they reach your desired level of crispiness and golden brown color.
Quick Tip!
If you’re using frozen toast bread slices for air frying, there’s no need to defrost them beforehand; you can cook them straight from the freezer! You may need to add a minute or two to the cooking time.
Flip them halfway through, and keep an eye on the bread during the last minute of cooking to avoid them from becoming too dark.
Once done, carefully remove the toasted bread from the air fryer using tongs or a spatula.
Serve them immediately with your favorite toppings or enjoy it plain as a side dish to your favorite soups or stews.
My Favorite Toppings for Air Fryer Toast
- Sautéed oyster mushrooms – To prepare sautéed oyster mushrooms, start by melting some butter in a pan over medium heat. Then, add cleaned and roughly shredded oyster mushrooms to the pan. Sauté for a few minutes until they are tender, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Once done, remove the pan from the heat and garnish the mushrooms with chopped parsley before serving. Lightly butter your freshly air-fried toast and you are good to go!
- Avocado – Slice or mash a quarter of an avocado, season it with salt and pepper, and drizzle it with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil before topping your lightly buttered air-fried toast.
- Feta cheese – Crumble some feta cheese, and spread it over your lightly buttered air-fried toast. Top it with cherry tomato halves or Air Fryer Roasted Tomatoes, and some chopped parsley.
- Honey – Spread a generous amount of butter on your toast as soon as it comes out of the air fryer. Then, drizzle on some honey and sprinkle with crunchy walnuts.
Expert Tips From the Chef
- Choose the Right Bread: Use bread slices that are thick enough to hold up well in the air fryer without becoming too crispy.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer before adding the bread slices.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Make sure to arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving some space between each slice for even cooking.
- Flip Halfway Through: Flip the bread slices halfway through the cooking time to ensure they toast evenly on both sides.
- Adjust Cooking Time: Keep an eye on the toast during the cooking process and adjust the cooking time as needed to achieve your desired level of crispiness.
- Serve Immediately: Serve the toast hot from the air fryer for the best texture and flavor.
