Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Wings

My tangy and refreshing Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Wings are made with fresh lemon zest, lemon juice, cracked black pepper, and a light buttery glaze. They cook up crisp on the outside and stay tender inside. It is a simple way to get that classic lemon-pepper flavor at home without needing a store-bought seasoning mix.

Lemon pepper wings cooked in air fryer and finished with lemon and pepper glaze.

The lemon keeps it fresh, the butter and honey add a light richness, and the pepper and chili bring a gentle heat. The glaze lightly coats each wing, giving them a soft shine and a fresh, citrusy finish without feeling heavy.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Fresh lemon gives a clean, natural taste.
  • Butter and honey soften the sharpness of the lemon.
  • Air fryer keeps cooking simple and quick.
  • Balanced seasoning keeps the flavour clear and fresh.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Labelled ingredients for the recipe
  • Chicken wings – They can be whole or split into flats and drumettes. Fresh wings work best, but thawed wings are fine as long as they are dried well before cooking.
  • Baking powder – It helps the wings crisp in the air fryer.
  • Seasoning – I use salt, pepper, and chili, but you can also use your favorite seasoning, like garlic powder, onion granules, or smoked paprika.
  • Lemon – The zest and juice of a lemon give a fresh, natural citrus taste that stands out more than bottled juice.
  • Butter&honey – The butter adds richness, while the honey rounds out the sharpness of the lemon.

How to Make Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Wings

Important Note

Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.

Start by preparing the chicken wings. Cut off any wing tips, if there are any, then separate the wings into drumettes and flats between the joints.

A chicken wing is cut into a drumette and a flat.

Pat them dry well with paper towels, as removing excess moisture helps them cook up crisp in the air fryer.

Quick Tip!

Frozen wings are fine too; just thaw them overnight and pat them dry well to avoid extra moisture.

Place the wings in a large bowl and add the salt, crushed black pepper, chili flakes, and baking powder. Mix everything until the wings are evenly coated.

Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F). Once hot, arrange the wings in a single layer in the basket, making sure they are not crowded. Cook them in batches if needed so the air can circulate properly.

Seasoned chicken wings are placed in an air fryer basket.

Air fry the wings for about 18 to 22 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking. They should come out golden and crisp on the outside, with a slightly firm texture when touched.

While the wings are cooking, prepare the lemon butter glaze. In a small pan over low heat, melt the butter gently. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, and honey, then stir until everything is combined. Let it warm for a minute or two, but do not let it boil.

Once the wings are cooked, transfer them to a clean bowl. Pour the warm glaze over the wings and toss them until they are evenly coated. The glaze should lightly cover each piece without making them soggy.

Crispy chicken wings are served with extra glaze on the side.

Serve the wings right away while they are still warm and crisp.

Recipe Tips From the Chef

  • Dry the wings well before seasoning.
  • Cook in a single layer for better crisping.
  • Turn halfway through cooking.
  • Keep in mind that larger wings may require slightly longer cooking times, while smaller wings may cook more quickly. Adjust your cooking time accordingly based on the size of the wings you’re using.
  • Use fresh lemon for a cleaner taste.
  • Adjust chili to suit your heat level.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

If you have leftovers, let the wings cool completely before storing them. Place them in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze cooked wings for up to 2 months. Thaw them in the fridge overnight before reheating in the air fryer.

For reheating, use the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for about 5 to 7 minutes. This helps bring back the crisp texture without drying them out.

Serving Ideas

These air fryer lemon pepper wings are easy to serve with simple sides that don’t take attention away from the chicken. They work well with crispy Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries, Air Fryer German Potato Pancakes, or Air Fryer Potato and Onions, which balance the lemon with something warm and filling.

A fresh green salad on the side keeps things light and adds a bit of contrast to the richness of the wings. Easy Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza, flatbreads, or wraps also work well if you want to turn them into a more complete meal.

You can also serve them with simple dips like Cacik (Turkish Yogurt Dip) or a mild garlic mayo, which pair well with the lemon without covering it. They are also a good option for sharing, especially when served straight from the air fryer while still warm.

Variations

You can adjust this recipe in a few simple ways depending on what you have or what you prefer. For a spicier version, increase the chili flakes or add a small pinch of cayenne pepper. This adds more heat without changing the base flavour too much. If you like a hint of garlic, you can stir a small amount of finely grated garlic into the butter glaze. It blends well with the lemon and adds a deeper note.

For a sharper finish, you can skip the honey. The lemon flavour will stand out more and give the wings a more direct citrus taste. If you already have lemon pepper seasoning in your cupboard, you can add a small amount alongside the fresh ingredients for a slightly stronger peppery finish.
