Ingredients You’ll Need

- Potatoes – Most types of potatoes work well with this air fryer onions and potatoes recipe. Yukon Gold potatoes give a soft inside, Russet potatoes cook a bit drier, and red potatoes hold their shape well. You can use what you have on hand without changing the method.
- Onion – You can use brown, white, shallots, or red onions for this recipe.
- Olive oil – I prefer cooking olive oil; however, you can replace it with any other type of olive oil or vegetable oil.
- Seasonings – Feel free to use your favorite seasonings. Sometimes I add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a little heat or garlic powder for a savory touch.
How to Make Air Fryer Potatoes and Onions
Important Note
Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.
Wash the potatoes and cut them into 2 cm cubes (about ¾ inch) so they cook evenly. Place the diced potatoes in a bowl, add olive oil, salt, pepper, and any seasoning you like, then mix well. Preheat the air fryer, then add the potatoes to the basket in a single layer.

Cook at 195°C (383°F) for 15 minutes, shaking the basket once halfway through. After 15 minutes, add the sliced onions to the basket and gently mix them with the potatoes.

Continue cooking for another 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender inside and lightly crisp on the outside, and the onions are soft and lightly browned.

Recipe Tips From the Chef
- Cut the potatoes into similar sizes so they cook evenly.
- Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. If you’re making a larger batch, cooking in two rounds gives better results.
- Shake or stir halfway through cooking.
- Adjust seasoning once cooking is finished.
Storage and Reheating
Leftover air fryer potatoes and onions store well. Let them cool fully before transferring them to an airtight container. Keep them in the fridge for up to three days. The texture will soften slightly, but the flavor holds up well.
To reheat, place the potatoes back in the air fryer at 360°F (182°C) for about four to five minutes until warmed through. You can also reheat them in a skillet over low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Serving Ideas
Air Fryer Potato and Onions are easy to serve in many ways. They work well alongside eggs for breakfast, especially with Air Fryer Mushroom and Cheese Omelette or fried eggs.
For lunch or dinner, they pair nicely with Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Thighs, Air Fryer Marinated Salmon, or Air Fryer Sausage Links. You can also spoon them into wraps or serve them as a side with Juicy Air Fryer Burgers. They fit naturally into bowls with beans or vegetables when you want a simple, filling meal.
Recipe FAQs
Soaking is optional. Some people soak diced potatoes in cold water for about 20 minutes, then dry them well before cooking. This can help with texture, but it’s not required.
A small amount of oil helps with browning and texture. You can reduce the amount, but skipping it fully may affect how the potatoes cook.
Yes, frozen sliced potatoes can be used. They may need a few extra minutes in the air fryer, and shaking the basket helps them cook evenly.
