How to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

Important Note

Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.

Start by stacking your tortillas and cutting them into triangles, just like classic tortilla chips. Try to keep the sizes even so they cook at the same rate.

4 small tortillas cutn in eight triangles

Place the tortilla pieces in a bowl and drizzle over the olive oil. Toss them gently until all the pieces are lightly coated. This helps them crisp up properly. Sprinkle over the salt and any extra seasoning you’re using. Give them another quick mix so everything is evenly distributed. Lay the tortilla pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Don’t stack them too much, or they won’t cook evenly. You may need to cook in batches.

Set the air fryer to 180°C (350°F) and cook for 5–7 minutes. Keep an eye on them near the end of the cooking time. Once they turn golden and crisp, remove them and let them cool slightly before serving them with your favorite dip. They will firm up a bit more as they sit.

Quick Tip!

Shake the basket halfway through so they cook evenly on all sides.

Recipe Tips From the Chef

  • Stack your tortillas and cut them into equal-sized triangles, just like classic tortilla chips, so they cook at the same rate.
  • Lay the tortilla pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Don’t stack them too much, or they won’t cook evenly. You may need to cook in batches.
  • Adjust time for thickness, as thicker tortilla bread may need an extra minute or two.
  • Keep an eye on them near the end of the cooking time. Once they turn golden and crisp, remove them and let them cool slightly. They will firm up a bit more as they sit.

Storage Instructions

Let the chips cool fully before storing them. If you place them in a container while still warm, they can soften. Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature. They are best eaten within 2 days for the best texture. If they lose their crispness, place them back in the air fryer for 1–2 minutes to bring them back.

Variations

You can easily adjust these chips depending on what you feel like having.

  • Spicy chips: Add chili powder or a pinch of cayenne before cooking
  • Cheese style: Sprinkle a little grated cheese over the chips right after they come out
  • Lime and salt: Add fresh lime zest after cooking for a fresh finish
  • Garlic chips: Toss with garlic powder before air frying

Serving Ideas

These air fryer tortilla chips work well with a range of simple sides. You can serve them as a snack or an appetizer with dips or add them to a meal for a bit of crunch. They go well with guacamole, salsa, yogurt-based dips such as borani and tzatziki, or hummus. You can also use them as a base for quick nachos by adding toppings and warming them slightly.

They’re also nice served alongside soups or salads for a bit of texture.

Recipe FAQs

Why are my tortilla chips not crispy?

They may need a bit more time in the air fryer. Also, make sure the basket isn’t overcrowded so the air can circulate properly.

Can I make these ahead?

Yes, you can make them a few hours ahead. Let them cool fully, store them in a container, and reheat briefly if needed.

Are tortilla chips healthy?

Tortilla chips can be part of a balanced diet, but they’re not exactly “healthy.” They’re usually high in calories and salt, especially store-bought ones. Making them at home in the air fryer with less oil is a lighter option, but it’s still best to enjoy them in moderation.
