Tater Tots in Air Fryer
My homemade Tater Tots in Air Fryer recipe is made with grated floury potatoes, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, Cajun spices, and a light spray of oil for a crisp golden outside. They are cheaper than buying frozen tots, easy to season the way you like, and come out with a soft potato center without needing a pan of hot oil. If you searched for crispy air fryer tater tots made from scratch, this recipe gives you clear timings, simple ingredients, and all the little tips that stop them from sticking, falling apart, or turning soggy.

These mini tater tots are great as a snack, appetizer, or potato side dish. I like serving them with ketchup, ranch, garlic mayo, spicy mayo, or Tartar Sauce with Capers when I want something a little different. They also work really well next to Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Wings, Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Thighs, Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Tenders, or Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks.
Unlike frozen tater tots, these are made with real potatoes and pantry spices, so you know exactly what goes in them. The potatoes are partly cooked first, then grated, mixed with a small amount of flour, shaped into little cylinders, sprayed with oil, and cooked in the air fryer until crisp and golden.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Partly boiling the potatoes before grating helps them hold their shape without turning into mashed potato.
- Floury potatoes such as Russet, Maris Piper, King Edward, Desiree, or Rooster give the best texture because they are higher in starch.
- A small amount of flour helps bind the grated potatoes without making the tots heavy.
- Cheddar adds flavor and helps the inside taste a little richer without overpowering the potatoes.
- The recipe is easy to make ahead. You can shape the tots and refrigerate them for later, or freeze them for another day.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Potatoes – Use Russet, Maris Piper, King Edward, Desiree, or Rooster potatoes. These potatoes are better for tater tots because they grate well and cook up fluffy inside. Avoid waxy potatoes if you can, as they can make the mixture wetter and less easy to shape.
- Seasoning – For seasoning, I go for garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, cajun spices, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. But don’t hesitate to try various seasonings and tweak the amounts to match your own taste.
- All-purpose flour – You only need a small amount to help the grated potatoes hold together. Plain white flour works the same way if you are in the UK.
- Cheddar – Grated cheddar adds flavor and helps make the inside a little softer. Use a hard cheese that grates well. Monterey Jack or Parmesan can also work.
- Oil – Olive oil spray, avocado oil spray, or vegetable oil spray all work. A light coating is enough. Too much oil can make the tots greasy instead of crisp.
How to Make Mini Air Fryer Tater Tots
Important Note
Before you start cooking, note that times may differ among air fryers. I develop my recipes using a Cosori 6.8 air fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, view my recipes as a general guide and tweak the cooking time—add a bit more or cook slightly less as needed.
Peel the potatoes, cut them in half, and place them in a large pot with plenty of cold water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then cook the potatoes for about 7 to 8 minutes. They should be slightly tender on the outside but still firm in the middle. Drain the potatoes well and leave them until they are cool enough to handle. This cooling time is important because hot potatoes can break apart too easily when grated.

Once cooled, grate them using the large holes of a box grater. Place the grated potatoes in a large mixing bowl. Add the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, Cajun seasoning, and grated cheddar. Mix everything gently but thoroughly until the seasoning and cheese are spread evenly through the potatoes.

Take a small amount of the mixture and shape it into a short cylinder. Press it gently in your hands so it holds together, but do not squash it too much. Repeat until all the mixture is shaped into mini tater tots. Try to keep them similar in size so they cook at the same speed.

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F / 200°C for about 5 minutes. Lightly spray the tater tots all over with oil. You can line the air fryer basket with perforated parchment paper if your air fryer allows it, but do not block the airflow completely.

Place the tater tots in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving a little space between each one. Cook in batches if needed. Air fry at 400°F / 200°C for 18 to 20 minutes, turning them gently halfway through, until they are golden brown and crisp.

Let the tots cool for a couple of minutes before serving. They firm up slightly as they sit, and the inside will be very hot straight from the air fryer.
Quick Note
Serve mini tater tots soon after cooking. They are at their crispiest when fresh from the air fryer.

Recipe Tips From the Chef
- Do not fully cook the potatoes before grating. They should be partly cooked and still firm in the center.
- Let the potatoes cool before grating. Warm potatoes can turn soft and sticky, which makes shaping harder.
- Use the large holes of a box grater. Finely grated potatoes can make the mixture too dense.
- Do not overcrowd the basket. The air needs space to move around each tot.
- Turn them gently halfway through cooking. If they feel stuck, give them a few more minutes before moving them.
- Use perforated parchment paper only if it is suitable for your air fryer. Regular parchment can block the airflow and stop the tots from crisping properly.
Why Are My Tater Tots Falling Apart?
Tater tots can fall apart if the potatoes are overcooked, grated too finely, mixed too roughly, or moved too early in the air fryer. The mixture needs enough structure to hold its shape, and the tots need time to crisp on the bottom before you turn them.
If the mixture feels too wet, add a tiny bit more flour, but do not overdo it. Too much flour can make the tots heavy. If the tots are very soft after shaping, chill them in the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes before air frying.
Can I Use Frozen Tater Tots in Air Fryer?
Yes, frozen tater tots cook really well in the air fryer. Place them in the basket straight from frozen and cook at 400°F / 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Add a few extra minutes if you want them extra crisp.
You do not need to thaw frozen tater tots before air frying. Thawing can make them soft and more likely to break apart.
Serving Suggestions
Air fryer tater tots are great with simple dipping sauces like ketchup, barbecue sauce, ranch, garlic mayo, burger sauce, or spicy mayo. For something sharper, serve them with Tartar Sauce with Capers or a yogurt-based dip.
They make a good side dish for Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas, Best Air Fryer Crab Cakes, Air Fryer Steak Bites and Mushrooms, Air Fryer Marinated Salmon Recipe, Chicken Tenders in Air Fryer, Meatloaf in Air Fryer.
You can also serve them for brunch with egg dishes. For a fun sharing plate, add grated cheese, sliced scallions, jalapeños, sour cream, and crispy bacon pieces on top while the tots are still hot.
Make Ahead Instructions
You can shape the tater tots ahead of time and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before cooking. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet or tray, cover them, and refrigerate until needed.
For best results, spray them with oil just before air frying. If they feel a little soft after chilling, handle them gently and cook them in a single layer.
How to Freeze Homemade Tater Tots
To freeze uncooked tater tots, shape them and place them on a parchment-lined tray in a single layer. Freeze until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag or airtight container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Cook them straight from frozen at 400°F / 200°C. They may need a few extra minutes compared with fresh homemade tots. Do not thaw them first, as they can become wet and harder to handle.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Let leftover tater tots cool completely before storing them. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat tater tots in the air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 350°F / 180°C. Place the tots in the basket and heat for 5 to 7 minutes, shaking once, until hot and crisp again.
You can reheat them in the microwave, but they will be softer. If crispiness matters, the air fryer is the better option.
Recipe FAQs
Frozen tater tots usually take 12 to 15 minutes at 400°F / 200°C. Shake the basket halfway through and add a few extra minutes if you want them crispier.
This recipe for air fryer tater tots is not gluten-free because it includes flour as a binding agent. However, if you are gluten intolerant, you can substitute wheat flour with a gluten-free version.
Preheating helps the tots start crisping as soon as they go into the basket. I recommend preheating the air fryer to 400°F / 200°C for about 5 minutes before adding the homemade tots.
